Creating an inspired learning destination in the heart of London

In October 2023, New York University (NYU) announced the relocation of its London campus to a new 75,000 sq ft academic centre at 265 The Strand. This strategic move aimed to elevate the study-away experience by offering students a more spacious, modern, and collaborative environment in the heart of the city.

To deliver on this ambitious vision, NYU chose IE as its furniture partner, leveraging our experience designing flexible, high-performance learning and working spaces.

From concept development through to move-in and clearance, IE delivered a comprehensive furniture and relocation solution that included design, specification, procurement, sustainable clearance, and logistics

Working alongside design partner BlueBottle Interiors and construction specialist Collins Construction, the IE team facilitated a smooth transition while aligning with NYU’s global standards and sustainability objectives.

A collaborative, remote-first approach to campus design

With NYU’s key stakeholders located in the United States, much of the project was managed remotely. IE adopted a digital-first approach using virtual design tools, detailed product booklets, and online collaboration sessions to communicate layout, finishes, and budgets clearly and effectively.

Working closely with the Steelcase Education Design Team, we adapted US standards to meet UK specifications, ensuring that the new environment aligned with both institutional brand and educational priorities.

The new academic centre includes a variety of purpose-built spaces:

  • Modern classrooms and flexible teaching spaces
  • Shared and individual academic offices
  • Reception zones and transition areas
  • Atriums and well-being rooms for relaxation and social connection

Expertly navigating logistics and legacy clearance

Delivering into central London is never simple — and the historic building’s limited access and red route restrictions posed logistical challenges. IE's Services team expertly coordinated timed deliveries, utilised smaller vehicles where needed, and worked closely with local authorities and site management to minimise disruption.

The project was completed on time and on budget, despite the logistical constraints.

But our involvement didn’t end at installation. IE also managed the clearance of NYU’s former building, including donating high-quality furniture and equipment to Olive Academies, a charitable trust supporting students facing difficulties in mainstream education. This reuse initiative not only supported the local community but also contributed to NYU’s sustainability goals.

A partnership that delivered results

Throughout the project, we demonstrated our expertise in international furniture standards, complex logistics, and educational space planning. Feedback from both NYU and Olive Academies was overwhelmingly positive, with special praise for the IE team’s professionalism, responsiveness, and dedication.
